When the truck driver in Namibia prepared to inspect his truck’s tires at the start of his workday, he made an unexpected discovery. To his surprise, he found a peculiar small creature curled around one of the large tires. Upon closer examination, the driver realized that the unusual visitor was a baby aardvark.
Concerned for the well-being of the tiny creature, the driver searched for its mother but couldn’t locate her anywhere. Acting swiftly, he carefully picked up the baby aardvark and placed it inside his truck.
Upon reaching his workplace, the driver promptly contacted Dr. Erika, a local veterinarian who also worked at ZURI Orphanage, seeking assistance for the little creature. Dr. Erika de Jager was delighted and eager to provide care and comfort to the baby aardvark. She felt an instant connection with the tiny animal.
The rescued orphan aardvark was given the name E.T. and received not only nourishment and attention at the rehabilitation center but also abundant love and affection. As E.T. was fed with bottled milk, he began to gain weight and thrive.
At three months old, E.T. displayed a curious and cheerful nature. He quickly adapted to his new life and formed a close bond with two rescued dogs named Spokie and Zarah, who helped him overcome his sense of loss. The dogs treated E.T. as if he were a puppy, engaging in play and looking after him. E.T., in turn, enjoyed spending time with his canine friends, sharing meals and even sleeping in the same bed. It seemed as though he considered himself a dog.
After five months of rehabilitation, E.T. was deemed ready for release into the wild. However, he continued to visit his beloved caretaker and canine companions daily, returning to see them despite his newfound freedom.
