When a newborn pilot whale got caught in a river mouth at low tide on a beach in Costa Rica, a group of surfers stepped in to save the whale.
One of the surfers, Mauricio Camareno, claimed that they heard cries of agony and observed a “black lump.” When they looked farther, they saw the infant animal trying to breathe around 200 feet up the river.
Amelia Rueda was informed by Camareno that “she was quite weak and could not keep afloat.” To save the baby from drowning, the men dove into the water and lifted her up.
They reported the stranded whale to the Coast Guard and the environmental ministry, but neither organization came to the scene. Surfing group noted she had regained strength after supporting her for more than six hours. The surfers dragged her out to deeper waters at high tide. She made many attempts to find her pod before swimming off.
Social media users have praised the men for saving the men. One commenter said, “What amazing people you are! I’m so grateful that you saved this amazing animal, whose IQ may be on par with ours or perhaps higher.
