Men Stay with Abandoned Baby Elephants at Night.

Meet these guys from the David Sheldrick Wild Animals Trust Fund (DSWT), who devote their whole day and night to caring for baby elephants. Additionally, they spend the late evening nearby to feed and watch over them.

One carer, who is also the father of a child and a young adult, said, “It really feels the same to me as having my children in the same space.” Getting up at all hours to feed and alter them “really felt very similar to when they were infants.”

Several baby elephants lost their families even when they were only a month old. The main causes of their orphanage are poachers and habitat loss.

Fortunately, these men handle them just like their mothers do.

When it’s cool outside, they make sure the baby elephants are protected before sleep. Baby elephants wake up and draw the caregiver blankets every three hours because they are hungry for milk.

The keeper continued, “Several years ago when the caregivers used to sleep on a cushion on the floor, the elephant would certainly pull the caregiver’s blanket off to wake them up for milk and also touch their face with a wet trunk.” The keepers currently nap in a bunk above the elephants.

The caretakers’ explanation that they wake up right away every three hours was due to their sleep habits.
