Black flamingos seem to come from Disney animated films and fairy tales.
Nevertheless, it just so happened that Cyprus saw a black flamingo. Flamingos in colors other than pink are extremely rare and unusual.
Because of its coloration, the black flamingo stands out in the crowd. Yet, it turns out that this dark one has melanism, a rare hereditary disorder. The bird is darker than its brethren because it has an excessive amount of melanin.
Inheriting this genetic disorder in flamingos is uncommon. It is more frequently found in hawks and ducks.
For many birds, dark feathers are advantageous. These help them hide from more powerful predators. The uncommon flamingo’s feathers are unhealthy in this instance. They are easily breakable.
Also, during mating season, the coloration makes it challenging to draw in other potential partners.
