A tired, hungry polar bear wanders across a flat area. It makes its way across a remote Canadian island in quest of food. These images bring back the horrific reality that the person himself caused.
The ice-free island has put the polar bears’ ability to survive in peril by cutting them off from prey at sea, which ice floes usually help them reach.
Paul Nicklen, a former biologist-turned-photographer who works for the Sea Legacy conservation organization, shot the footage.
Over the course of his career working with animal conservationists, photographer Paul Nicklen has observed over 3,000 bears. But for the rest of his life, he will recall this experience.
As the Arctic ice continues to melt, more and more areas that were formerly polar bears’ “bread” habitats are becoming visible.
Animals are compelled to traverse the arid terrain, either departing for the mainland or waiting for an agonizing end on the islands, because they can no longer leave the land to fend for themselves.
“Many people believe that we should simply feed the hungry bears.” But there’s more going on here. We shall lose the arctic ecology if Earth’s atmosphere continues to warm. Nicklen wants us to start safeguarding the Earth, stop deforestation, and limit our carbon footprint.
