Kevin Costner Says He Won’t Be Returning to Yellowstone in New Video: ‘I Loved It’

Alright, everyone, gather around. Kevin Costner, the movie industry’s beloved cowboy, has just dropped some shocking news. The Oscar-winning actor has officially announced his departure from the hit series Yellowstone, in a twist worthy of a soap opera. And he didn’t hold back, delivering the news with the subtlety of a bull in a china shop.

In case you missed it, Costner recently posted a video on Instagram where he revealed that he would not be returning as John Dutton for the second half of season 5. Addressing his fans with the grace of a seasoned storyteller, he said, “After a grueling year and a half working on Horizon and taking care of all the necessary tasks, I just wanted to let you know that, much like you, I love Yellowstone. But I’ve come to the realization that I won’t be able to complete Season 5b or continue beyond that.”

What an unexpected plot twist! It’s as hard to believe as skipping dessert.

“This experience was transformative for me. I loved it, and I’m sure you did too,” Costner continued, hitting every emotional chord. “I wanted to let you know that I’m not coming back.” He then signed off with a classic line: “I love the relationship we’ve been able to develop. I’ll see you at the movies.” I have a feeling there won’t be a dry eye in the house.

From 2018 to 2022, Costner brought John Dutton III, a character as tough as a two-dollar steak, to life. He led an ensemble cast including Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, and Wes Bentley, playing the patriarch of the Dutton family. If Yellowstone were a rock band, Costner would undoubtedly be the frontman.

Production delays caused by the writers’ strike pushed back the release of season 5. The first half aired from November 2022 to January 2023. Originally promised for November 2023, the conclusion was delayed. Now, mark your calendars for November 10, 2024, when the Dutton family will return to our screens.

In an exclusive interview, Costner shared his feelings: “I liked the people on the show. I found the premise appealing. That world is my favorite.” His love for Yellowstone is as genuine as mom’s apple pie, underscored by his ranking as #1 in PEOPLE’s annual 100 Reasons to Love America issue.

“When Taylor [Sheridan] first pitched it to me, it was one season and [like] a long movie, which [is] speaking my language,” Costner explained. “But in the end, I believe the studio didn’t want that to happen.”

Costner, ever the warrior, gracefully steps away, leaving fans with memories of his powerful performance and a promise of future cinematic endeavors.
