New husband demands wife give stepdaughter her family heirloom instead of her own daughter

Owning a family heirloom comes with the responsibility of ensuring it is securely passed down from one generation to the next. For one woman, however, this straightforward tradition took a troubling turn when her new husband suggested an alternative plan.

The 35-year-old woman shared her dilemma on Reddit, seeking advice. She explained that her family tradition involves giving an emerald necklace to the eldest son or daughter on their 14th birthday. This cherished heirloom is set to be given to her daughter Emily on her upcoming 14th birthday in January 2024.

The woman revealed that she and her husband Joey, who have both been married before and have daughters from their previous relationships, had been married for two years.

Even though Joey was aware of the family custom and the plan to give Emily the necklace, he made an unexpected suggestion during a discussion about Christmas gifts. Joey proposed that the emerald necklace be given to his daughter Sophia instead, to show the mother’s acceptance of Sophia as her daughter. The woman, uncomfortable with this idea, explained that Emily was excited about receiving the necklace and was aware of the family tradition. Joey, however, remained adamant and would not change his mind.

He accused his wife of favoritism, suggesting that she could easily buy another necklace for Emily from Amazon. Despite his pressure, the woman stood firm, insisting that Emily would receive the family heirloom as planned. Joey responded by giving her the silent treatment, except when the children were around.

Joey then escalated the issue by involving his mother and sister, who also accused the woman of favoritism and sided with Joey in believing that Sophia should get the necklace. Concerned about the strain on her marriage, the woman turned to Reddit for feedback on whether her actions were justified. The online community overwhelmingly supported her.

“You’re not favoring one kid over another,” one user commented. “Emily is your child, and she owns the necklace. There is nothing your [stepdaughter] is entitled to. If it was really that essential to him, I would have told him that his daughter could obtain the imitation from Amazon.”

Another user advised, “You should store the necklace in a secure location, such as a bank box, since I can assure you that as soon as Emily gets her hands on it, it will either ‘disappear’ or be shattered by ‘accident.’”

Others echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of keeping the necklace safe from both the stepdaughter and the husband. They also suggested explaining to Emily why it needed to be kept secure.
