A new year is a time for many people to advance in their personal or professional lives.
The 70-year-old ecoactivist Pat Smith, though, spent her entire year working to clean up the beaches in her native Devon and Cornwall.
Smith spent the entire year cleaning 52 beaches, using a special stick for picking up trash, a bundle of waste bags, rubber gloves, and other supplies.
Smith’s commitment to the environment is commendable, but her actions also help her physically.
She made light of the fact that individuals should volunteer to clean up beaches rather than pay for exercise programs.
Not only is it free, but it also promotes a green environment and keeps one in shape.
It is uncommon for one person to do so much in so little time.
But Smith’s commitment to sanitizing the beaches in her hometown should serve as an example to all of us.
It serves as a reminder that little things that many people do collectively can make a tremendous difference in the world. Smith’s work is a brilliant illustration of the value of environmental protection as well as the influence of individual action.
Take a cue from Smith, and let’s all work to improve the environment in our own unique ways.
