Katie Holmes stated in a rare interview that she wants to “protect” the daughter she had with Tom Cruise.
In 2012, after six years of marriage, Holmes and Mission Impossible star Cruise ended their relationship. Their breakup was highly publicized.
Following the divorce, which sparked numerous rumors, Holmes retained custody of their daughter, Suri. Holmes has been open about how little the now sixteen-year-old has been seen over the years.
Holmes gained fame at the age of 19 after landing a role in the teen drama Dawson’s Creek.
In an interview with Glamour Magazine, Holmes said, “I remember really wanting to grow as an actor and not just do things to capitalize on the moment when we were doing Dawson’s Creek and it was successful. I wanted to learn from other people.”
But after she began dating Hollywood A-lister Tom Cruise, the Batman Begins actress reached new heights. The media’s attention on the couple and their family intensified with the birth of their daughter Suri.
The increased scrutiny led to new paparazzi photos of Tom and Katie’s young daughter surfacing almost daily. In response, Katie decided to avoid the limelight to protect her daughter’s morals, resulting in a career pause that lasted until 2011.
As noted, Tom and Katie split up in 2012, five years after getting married in an Italian ceremony.
Given their status as one of the most well-known couples, it’s unsurprising that the rumors went wild. There was much speculation about the breakup, with some believing Holmes was wary of the Church of Scientology.
Katie filed for divorce in New York, reportedly to improve her chances of gaining sole custody of Suri, as the law prohibits giving partial custody to parents in conflict. Once Holmes was granted sole custody, she ensured that Suri stayed away from Scientology. Tom, allegedly caught off guard by the divorce, couldn’t control the narrative, unlike his breakup with Nicole Kidman.
Holmes’s strong desire to protect her child remains evident. Before her latest film, Rare Objects, debuted, the 44-year-old said:
“Since my child was so noticeable when she was a little child, I really like to protect her, which has been extremely important to me. I feel very lucky to be her mother. She is a very remarkable individual.”
It was recently revealed that Tom Cruise and his daughter rarely interact. Page Six reported that the 60-year-old Top Gun star is no longer active in Suri’s life and hasn’t seen her in years.
