Steve, a farmer from Scotland, kept a small herd of dairy cows. One day, he noticed that Lila, who normally produced the most milk, was completely dry. After the veterinarian confirmed that she was healthy, Steve decided to observe her more closely in the meadow near the forest’s edge.
He soon discovered that Lila would occasionally venture into the forest in the evening. Curious, he decided to follow her. Each day, when Steve brought the cows to graze in a clearing near the forest, he noticed Lila lagging behind the group. Determined to find out why, he quietly followed her, not wanting to scare her away. Eventually, he arrived at a secluded clearing surrounded by trees, where Lila was hiding something.
As Steve approached, he saw a tiny calf. It appeared that Lila had taken the calf to the clearing a few weeks earlier, possibly to keep it hidden. It took Steve about ten minutes to understand what was happening. Typically, calves on the farm were separated from their mothers and raised apart before being moved to a new herd.
Steve told reporters that it seemed Lila was unhappy with this practice. Consequently, he decided to leave the calf with Lila. This experience led Steve to reconsider how he managed his farm.
